BAHRAICH ARSENIC MITIGATION PROJECT (BAMP)

(2009)
Activities:

Education and Awareness:

BAMP has conducted a comprehensive socio-economic survey of the project villages. Each project habitation has a bill-board installed, displaying BAMP activities. BAMP staff has given presentations in all the schools using power-point and distributed brochures and hand-bills containing information about arsenic. Arsenic Mitigation Committees (AMC) have been formed in all the habitations which meet at regular interval. AMC chairmen meet every 2 months at BAMP office. Power point presentations are being arranged for the villagers.

Water testing:

BAMP has tested all the water sources (Government tube-wells, private tube-wells and dug-wells) for arsenic with the help of Wagtech & Merck Arsenic Field Kits. Recently we also checked the water sources for bacterial contamination. Arsenic contaminated tube-wells have been painted red and arsenic safe tube-wells green. (TW Survey Result 2)’

Health survey and Medical training:

BAMP Health Worker has conducted door to door survey for arsenic patients in all the habitations. She was assisted in her efforts by the Assistant Health Workers. She has identified 40 potential arsenicosis patients during her survey.

BAMP conducted a training program for the local doctors last December. Dr. Akhtar from Bangladesh and Dr. Idris from Lucknow imparted training to Bahraich doctors regarding diagnosis and treatment. of arsenicosis patients. We plan to organize another training program in the month of June.

Test boring:

BAMP organized test borings at 3 different sites at different depths (10 m, 30 m, 50 m & 100 m). The test borings were done to prepare the geological log profile which will help us to decide the water supply option in the project area.

Study tour:

We plan to organize a Study Tour to Bangladesh for BAMP staff, selected villagers and a doctor and an engineer. This exposure visit will help the group to learn arsenic problem, its health impacts and the mitigation measures, implemented by Asia Arsenic Network in Bangladesh.

BAMP is getting all possible support in its efforts from UP Jal Nigam (UPJN) and the local administration. We also stay in touch with Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Geological Survey of India (GSI) and UNICEF which are involved in arsenic mitigation measures.

In the villages, pumps have been painted in red and green.
