ECO FRIENDS MASSIVE GANGA CLEANING CAMPAIGN
 

( May 16-19, 2005 )

 

Eco Friends removed 68 rotten men and 4 beasts from a 4 km stretch of the river Ganga ( Old Ganga Ghat Bridge to Massacre Ghat) and buried them in the dry riverbed. 45 young volunteers, mostly MSW and Journalism students from CSJM University Kanpur actively participated in the campaign.
The bodies that were stuck in the sandy riverbed were first marked and then excavated on 15 th . Bhagwan, Gangaram, Rakesh, Ramesh, Chedi ..who belong to cremators community pulled out the bodies and buried them in the dry riverbed opposite Massacre Ghat on 16 th .

On World Environment Day, June 5, 2005 , Eco Friends organized a boat rally to raise awareness on pollution issues of the river Ganga and also to assess the current situation.

45 participants, mostly young university students attended the boat rally, along with Eco Friends staff and two graduate students from the School of Natural Resources , University of Michigan , USA . Altogether, 55 people participated. From Sarsaiyya ghat to Siddhanath ghat, the boats traveled along the Ganga, bearing banners proclaiming "Save Ganga" and "Do not float corpses in Ganga", accompanied by chants of "Ganga sewa-Bharat sewa" and "Ganga ko nirmal rahne do-Ganga ko aviral bahne do".

Many community members bathing and swimming along the river banks stood by to watch the rally as it passed. Unfortunately, even though Eco Friends recently removed approximately 100 decaying bodies from the river, 30 new bodies were seen floating in a 10 km stretch.

Thus Eco Friends made 4 km stretch of the river in Kanpur corpses free.
Eco Friends volunteers will protest against Ganga pollution and sit in Satyagraha on 18 th from 8 AM to 12 Noon at Phool Bagh near Gandhi statue.
On 19 th Eco Friends will fish out bodies from Massacre Ghat to Jajmau Bridge and bury them in the riverbed opposite Dapka Ghat, close to Golf Club.
