ROUND TABLE ON GANGA

'Ganga ke Astitva ke Liye" - the Mega project that was initiated by DPS Kalyanpur continues with the same enthusiasm. The challenging task of cleaning the holy Ganges cannot be accomplished in a few years. To this effect, DPS Kalyanpur in collaboration with Eco friends organized a Round Table Conference on 4 th December 2004 . Ganga ambassadors from 15 premier institutions of the city attended the Round Table to discuss problems and solutions of Ganga .The Round Table was chaired by Executive Secretary, Eco Friends, Mr. Rakesh K Jaiswal. He was highly appreciative of the interest being shown by the students and suggested to them ways in which they could constructively involve themselves in this noble venture. Ch. Harish Chandra, Retd. Prof. of English at Christ Church College , Kanpur was the guest of honour. Prof. Choudhary talked of the young students as a potent force to work for such social causes as it serves as training for their future. He discussed the importance of the various elements of nature that are worshipped as Gods and Goddesses since our survival is dependent on them. Inspiring these students to contribute in their own small ways, he exhorted them to enlighten the people close to them.

In the open house session, the students conveyed their anguish over the apathy of the Government and the polluting industries. They suggested various measures like banning of polythene bags, use of electric crematoria, treatment of tannery effluents etc. The vehemence in their voices spoke volumes of their strong determination. They also came up with a suggestion to introduce project work on Ganga in the curriculum of Classes XI & XII. One such project was presented to Mr. Rakesh Jaiswal.

The other guests present were Mr. Sandar & Mr. Karal from Holland . They are working with Eco Friends as interns and carrying out research on Ganga and Ganga Action Plan. Ms. Judith, a water management student from Belgium also graced the occasion. She emphasized on action more than mere words to make a break-through in the 'prayas'.

Principal, Mrs. Archana Nigam expressed her sincere thanks to the panel members for supporting the students. She was confident of the success of the efforts of the Ganga ambassadors to revive the old glory of the holy Ganga . She praised the students' representatives of the various institutions for their dedication and enthusiasm.
