Eco Friends launched ‘Adopt your street’ campaign on Jan 15, 2004 under the banner of ‘Alliance for a better and cleaner Kanpur’.
‘Alliance for a better and cleaner Kanpur’ has been formed to jointly work out strategies, enlighten and involve inhabitants and assist local administration in developing Kanpur as an environmentally safe town.
‘Adopt your street’ campaign is a pioneering initiative of Eco Friends to involve various stakeholders (local residents, businesses and government) in keeping the surroundings clean.
A small section of street (500 m long) from Gumti No 9 railway crossing to Gurudev Palace crossing has been taken up for regular cleaning and beautification. The idea is to set an example of the model street with the peoples’ initiative and participation. We intend to drive the message home that nothing would change without the involvement of people. Also we want to show how a cleaner environment would enrich the lives of the people. We want the locals to take up the challenge of keeping their surroundings clean.
We’ve tried to ensure the participation of all the local residents, institutions, businesses and government. Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Kanpur Nagar Nigam (KNN) have been on the forefront in extending their full cooperation to this initiative. Three educational institutions (Maharana Pratap Education Centre, Dr Virendra Swaroop Education Centre and Mount Carmel School) and business houses (Suri Shoes, Gurudev Cinema, State Bank of Patiala, United Merchantile Cooperative Bank Ltd., Syndicate Bank and Rama Enterprises) have assured assistance to make the endeavor a complete success. Local corporator and the eminent citizens have also promised their contributions towards the cause.
‘Adopt your street’ campaign is a process through which an achievable and sustainable clean up system would evolve. This would lead to a visual clean up of the chaotic environment of our city Kanpur.
Additional City Commissioner, Kanpur, formally launched “Adopt your street” campaign on Jan 15. The City commissioner assured all possible support to this campaign to make it a complete success. He added that such campaigns should be launched all over the city with the help of the locals and NGOs. Various officials of KNN and CPCB, the local Corporator, eminent residents were present in the inaugural function.
