Founder and Executive Secretary: Gave up his pursuit of a Ph.D. degree for the cause of fighting for restoring the sacred Ganga to its pristine purity. Has been involved in environmental activism since 1993. Has been extremely successful in generating mass awareness and widespread attention to the plight of Ganga at Kanpur. A tireless campaigner for Ganga, Rakesh has lectured widely both nationally and internationally to help focus attention on the urgent need to act for Ganga. As a freelance journalist, has written extensively on the issue of river pollution. Involved in environmental litigation against the state of Uttar Pradesh and Government of India and various polluting industries, several landmark judgments have been passed in his case to address the issue of pollution in the river Ganga and strengthening the Ganga Action Plan. Featured in various international documentaries and recently recipient of the Unsung Heroes of Compassion award by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, through Wisdom in Action, a California based Foundation, Rakesh has decided to devote his entire life to Ganga. |

A long-time associate of Ecofriends, he has participated in various campaigns of the organisation. Deeply moved by the rampant ecocide, he started writing about the prevalent environmental problems. His thought-provoking articles have been published in publications such as Femina, One India One People, The Telegraph, Dignity Dialogue and Environ. Apart from being Manager Communications in Ecofriends, Tirtho is also a Special Correspondent for Hinduism Today. He has worked as a City Reporter in Free Press Indore and has done many exclusive stories for The Times of India from Lucknow. Tirtho also worked as a Senior Copy Editor with Down To Earth, a Centre for Science and Environment fortnightly. He has campaigned widely for vermiculture as a way to solve the city garbage problem. Strictly against the polythene throwaway culture, he advocates energy conservation. |
Mohammed Owais |

Associated with Eco Friends since 1998, Mohammed Owais is the Program Officer responsible for executing field based activities. It is because of his consistent effort and diligence that Eco-Friends has been able to mobilize and motivate the Ganga communities to join its movement. Owais believes that Ganga depollution can be achieved if the local people are sensitized into the issue.
Owais’s expertise in computer applications has come in handy for the organisation. He has been assisting in creating computer generated presentations on Ganga for advocacy work.
