(November 06, 2003)
Eco Friends has been monitoring Ganga and Ganga Action Plan (GAP), including GAP assets for past several years. The monitoring included surveying of GAP assets through onsite investigation, following field visits to various pollution hotspots along the river including visits to GAP assets, examination of the condition of these assets and their functioning / non-functioning and interviews.
Eco Friends through its environmental campaign has created hundreds of Ganga Ambassadors in several educational institutions of Kanpur. Now, Eco Friends intends to involve these Ganga Ambassadors in the monitoring of Ganga and GAP. The objectives of the monitoring by the Ganga Ambassadors are:
Eco Friends has divided the monitoring of Ganga and GAP in several components. Each school has been allocated one component as per their choice and interest. Eco Friends had given orientation to each Ganga Ambassador through lectures and PowerPoint presentations, showing the status of GAP and Ganga. Each school has formed a team of 5 students and one teacher for this purpose. The monitoring will start from 07th November, 2003 and will be completed in a week time. The reports will then be shared with the media and subsequently sent to the concerned government authorities at various levels. The report will also be put up on Eco Friends website.
Ganga Ambassadors of The Chintels School, Dr Virendra Swaroop Public School, Govind Nagar, Wendy High School, Delhi Public School, Kalyanpur, St Aloysius High School and Sir Syed Public School are participating in Ganga and GAP monitoring (See the annexure). More schools will be involved in this monitoring program.
Eco Friends has been raising the issue of public participation in the progress review meeting of Project Planning and Coordination Unit (PPCU) of GAPSP and various other forums. As a result of which PPCU is starting a monthly newsletter to enhance the public participation in the project and awareness of civil society. Eco Friends will try to get the finding by Ganga Ambassadors published in this newsletter.
