• Basically all the plans should be brief, practical, worked out by authentic organizations and brought down to common man.
• Reverse osmosis (water purification technology), which is expensive, should be made affordable for a common man.
• Students / common men / businessmen / leaders should be part of decision-making process.
• Regular interaction in the form of a club “Blue Revolutionaries”.
• Firm and practical laws are required to prevent pollution. Public awareness is also a must.
• Import grains like rice, sugarcane etc which require a large quantity of water for cultivation. Encourage cultivation of less water requiring grains.
• Quality water –3 pot system with
1st part—Storage filter of cotton dhoti
2nd – Transfer of water
3rd – Use for drinking
• Parents-teachers meetings could be used for awareness raising and for various campaigns.
• Conservation of water should begin at home:
W—worthwhile use
A—adequate use
T—toxin free
E—economical use
R—recharge, replenish and reuse
• Keep the tap closed while brushing.
• The used water of washing machine can be reused for flushing the toilet.
• Water efficient toilet systems should be evolved. Avoid using fresh water for flushing human waste.
Keynotes
• Improvement in Ganga Action Plan.
• Proper implementation & regular monitoring of GAP by authorities & civil society.
• Rainwater harvesting
• Technical faults in interlinking should be taken into account before taking any decision
Finally - these kinds of workshops are really a positive step towards awareness raising in a big way, but indeed will only be fruitful when we, the students at schools and college level, are fully involved in the decision making process.

1. Interlinking of rivers:
Through this workshop, we have learnt about the actual position of the issue, so
we put forth some suggestions:
• Since interlinking of rivers is controversial, it should be discussed widely.
• The project should not be opposed outright, there are positive aspects also.
• The implications of such projects implemented in different countries should be studied.
• Costs are unimaginably high, hence eagle-eyed monitoring of the project is required.
2. Ganga Action Plan
• More effective Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) should be set up.
• We spend a lot of money in treating the water but even if a part of it were spent on education and awareness of the public, the intensity of the problem will be minimized.
3. Drinking Water
• Desalination and reverse osmosis should be undertaken.
• Rainwater harvesting needs impetus on a mass scale.
In the end we would just like to say:
“ There are many people to lead in theory, But we have to be one who leads in practice.”

• We say that there is a scarcity of water but we have 3 water parks in the city.
• We can have an action plan at the following three levels — personal, school and community.
At the personal level:
1. We should keep our surroundings clean.
2. We should stop the use of polythene bags and start using paper bags and cloth bags.
3. We should not waste water.
4. We should encourage the use of septic tanks in every house.
5. We can save a glass of water everyday and in turn there will be millions of liters of water saved.
At school level:
1. We should file a Writ Petition in the form of PIL saying that the schools of Kanpur are against the interlinking of rivers.
2. We can have practical application of projects like rainwater harvesting.
3. We can create public awareness in the locality by moving in groups and talking to people.
At community level:
1. We should organize awareness programs in the community against polybags and polluting practices.
2. We should perform skits in rural areas and try to bring in social changes in the communities through education and awareness.
3. We should ask the local government authorities to move the dhobi ghats (places for laundry along the river) to a place where there is availability of ample water and which is connected to Sewage Treatment Plant.
4. Kanpur Development Authority has made it mandatory for each housing complex to have a rainwater harvesting system but there is no control over the groundwater extraction by these complexes.
5. Unsewered areas should be sewered and the old sewerage system should be renovated. There should be a proper solid waste management system.
6. We cannot stop religious practices, therefore we should have an action plan to purify the river water.
7. We should stop the interference of intermediaries in the financing activities to stop the delay in the implementation of the program.

1. Like charity the conservation of water should also begin at home.
2. Raw collection of rainwater could be used for domestic purposes like flushing and gardening etc.
3. Rainwater harvesting should be made mandatory at schools, houses and all new construction sites.
4. Education regarding importance of water and need for conservation should be made compulsory at the school levels.
5. Sulabh International (community toilets) should be constructed on the banks of the rivers to mitigate the problem of open defecation.
6. Plantation of trees, and awareness programs should be organized in villages regularly.
7. Contests, seminars, workshops, signature campaigns etc. should be organized frequently for different target groups.
8. Our endeavor is to make a tangible lasting contribution to our community. Together we can and we will make a difference. A clean Ganga vision should be evolved or we will be left only with tears.
9. Remember - future belongs to those, who believe in the beauty of their dreams. There is a rainbow somewhere behind the blue sky. Dreams that you dare to dream do sometimes come true. Last but not the least, we can join hands in this noble movement with Eco Friends to make a dream come true.

3) Wendy High School
1. Proper planning and effective coordination amongst various agencies like Pollution Board, Jal Nigam, KDA, KNN and technical institutes is required while developing residential areas of Kanpur.
2. Rooftop rainwater should be harvested keeping in mind that the water does not get contaminated.
3. Norms should be fixed for drinking water.
4. Ganga Action Plan should be properly implemented and funds allocated for this should be properly utilized.
5. More awareness programs like workshops, seminars, street plays, rallies, contests etc. should be organized so that not only a handful of people but the entire society is educated about the importance of water.
6. Industrial effluents should not be discharged into the rivers without proper treatment of heavy & toxic metals like Mercury, Arsenic, Zinc, Chromium, and Lead etc. We should heavily penalize the industries which are discharging polluted water into the water bodies.
7. Water tax should be levied on the people who are drawing excess of ground water.
8. The bacterio-phases reported to be present in Ganga river water in the upper stream which eat up microorganisms should be artificially cultivated and added into the river when it enters the plain.
9. Rainwater should be harvested by collecting the water in ponds, lakes and other artificial reservoirs and this technique should be taken to the villages & also the remote areas.
10. Our scientists should invent cheaper methods of cleaning the drinking water.
